Ginger is an integral part of Pakistani cuisine. Most desi recipes are incomplete without using ginger. It’s fresh, aromatic and tangy taste adds a much needed boost to any dish you cook. More than that, it makes the food easily digestible and has several health benefits. But while we peel it, much of its chunk gets wasted with the peel.

And if you don’t have a peeler in your kitchen, you might end up slicing off too much of its gnarly bumps and crevices using a paring knife. Lo and behold, the power of a spoon. You can easily peel off a ginger without wasting any of its chunky parts if you use a special trick to peel it off using a spoon.

Follow this simple guide to learn how to peel off a ginger perfectly with the help of a spoon.

Gripping the spoon

It’s not the tool that you are using that does most of the trick, it’s how you are holding it that ensures maximum success. So before peeling a ginger with a spoon, you have to learn how to hold it in your hand first. Grab the spoon upside-down and grip the round part between your thumb and forefinger. Tilt the spoon so the edgy part of its tail is facing the ginger.

Holding the ginger

Hold the ginger in your hand and grip it firmly so it doesn't slip off your hands when you apply force. The whole peeling process will happen while you are holding the ginger in your hands.

Peeling the ginger

Now that you have mastered the holding part, let’s begin peeling. Start scraping the skin of the ginger holding the spoon as stated above. Repeat it in backward motion and continue until all the skin is scraped off.

Voila! Your ginger is ready to be grated, cut, diced, or chopped. Make sure you wash your hands before peeling off the ginger and wash the ginger afterwards too.
